Year 1

To celebrate the service children’s month, In Year 1 we created Dandelion art work. We created a water colour background and then added a dandelion. We used straws to gather paint and blow it across our paper to create the effect of a dandelion flying away.

In Maths, Year 1 have been focusing on counting in 2s, 5s and 10s. We have also enjoyed two visits from HSBC who talked to us about spending and saving money.

In History, Year 1 created their own Museum of Toys. They enjoyed sharing their own favourite toys with each other and began thinking about how toys may have changed over time.

Science Week 2024

The theme this year was ‘Time’

We started our week in Year 1 by exploring different periods of time and what time actually means.

We enjoyed a visit from The Northern Gas Network who explained the importance of looking after the environment and the impact of global warming. The children conducting an experiment with ice to see the effects that it is having on our planet over time.

Year 1 researched different methods of telling the time and created a water clock to measure 10 minutes.

We also made Jelly for a science experiment. We asked ourselves ‘Does adding fruit to jelly make it set faster?”

Year 1 celebrated World Parkinson’s Day, the children were inquisitive and asked mature questions to our visitor who shared her own experience with them.

In Year one, we have read The Dot. We then explored how we could paint our own dot using different coloured paint.

Our new Power of Reading book is ‘Leaf’ by Sandra Dieckmann. We have created our own polar bears using chalk, just like the one in the book.

In Science we are exploring the seasons. We have been exploring how the weather changes throughout the year and how the trees can change between seasons. We created a collage of each season and laminated the tree to create a classroom display.
