Last term the children really enjoyed reading and exploring lots of the different Julia Donaldson books. They were fantastic at acting out the Gruffalo, and did very well at remembering all of the different parts.

We have all had fun following instructions to make pirate hats and a healthy fruit salad. The children work hard on writing their own instructions and even remembered to use bossy verbs and conjunctions!

Please keep reading and practising keywords and phonemes at home, little and often will help your child learn.

We have been working on some practical aspects of maths which you could practise at home:

In Maths we are working hard to learn our doubles, halves and number bond facts which are all skills you could continue to practise at home.

We will also be working on 2D and 3D shapes soon.  We will be recognising them and describing their properties.

Your child needs to continue working towards their KIRF targets, please practise at home.  These are checked at least once a fortnight and your child will be given a new target if we feel they are ready.

As a school we are now using the maths program called Sumdog, this is a program which can be used at school or home to support your child’s learning.  The Year 1 children were introduced to this in the Autumn term, your child has brought home login details with a password so you can access it at home.  This is in the front of their reading record book.

Please refer to the Maths Calculation Booklet for Parents to assist you in supporting your child with any methods used in school.

Social Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEALs)

“Getting On” and “Me and My Relationships”

This theme focuses on relationships. It encourages the children to think about friendship, empathy, managing feelings and social skills.

Last term the children have enjoyed finding out about the history of the school. They have been very interested to see how the school has changed over the years.

We enjoyed exploring Brompton and the children identified lots of human and physical features around Brompton.

For our topic work this term we will be taking inspiration from the stories we are reading. The children will be able to lead their own learning as we will be able to follow their interests that arise from the stories.

In Geography we will be using atlases and world maps to track the path that Zeraffa the giraffe made on her journey. We will be learning the names of the different seas that she would have had to cross and the countries that she passed through.

In History we will be learning about the different transport that was used to transport Zeraffa. We will look at how the different transports have changed over times.

This term we will be creating our own etext. In order to do this the children will be practising typing skills, learning how to copy and paste images, getting to know how to save and open their documents and finding out how to use some features of ‘Power Point’.

We will also be exploring how different machines around school and home work. The children will learn how to controlled programmable toys.  We have started by giving our partners instructions on how to move a toy car.

Last term we were very lucky to have Ralph our specialist PE teacher teaching us tag rugby and hockey. The children learnt lots of new skills in their PE lessons with Ralph.

This term we have begun Box2Bfit which the children are really enjoying.

Please feel free to come and talk to us if you have any questions or concerns.  We are here to help and support you and your child.

Many thanks

Mrs. Austin and Miss. Gilbertson
